A recent study from the JAMA Pediatrics has connected the use of acid-suppressing medications in infants under 6 months old to an increased chance of developing allergies. This is not the first time acid blockers have been the cause of other medical issues. Currently, adults who use them are at risk for many side effects including cancer, gastritis and impaired immune systems. You can read more about the side effects of these drugs here.
Being a first time parent is tough and we often reach out to other parents for advice. I regularly see parents recommending these medications right of the bat. Granted we aren’t seeking actual medical advice from these parents but many times I see many naive moms accept that advice. My only hope is their doctor talks them out of it. Infant influx often clears up on its own and there are many ways to help your baby without medication.
The Mayo Clinic lists the following ways to treat your little one should infant influx arise.
- Giving your baby smaller, more-frequent feedings.
- Interrupting feedings to burp your baby.
- Holding your baby upright for 20 to 30 minutes after feedings.
- Eliminating dairy products, beef or eggs from your diet if you’re breast-feeding, to test if your baby has an allergy.
- Switching the type of formula you feed your baby.
- Using a different size of nipple on baby bottles. A nipple that is too large or too small can cause your baby to swallow air.
Personally we turn to our oils. DoTERRA’s digestive blend, DigestZen supports your digestive system in times of occasional stomach upset and indigestion. The blend of essential oils from Anise Seed, Peppermint Plant, Ginger Root, Caraway Seed, Coriander Seed, Tarragon Plant, and Fennel Seed is a natural way to maintain a healthy digestive system. This blend is absolutely safe but please remember to heavily dilute when using on children and persons with sensitivities. The pressure point for influx is between the big toe and the next. Using the digestive blend, massage this point.
When I was pregnant I had THE WORST heartburn. I thought I was having a heart attack. I applied the digestive blend and it dissipated in minutes. When Ethan was a newborn he had colic once, I used DigestZen and it never came back.
DigestZen can be ordered directly through my doTERRA website.
